- Lot Description
Oil on canvas self-portrait depicting the artist seated indoors beside a windowsill with potted plants with a winter landscape visible beyond the window. The composition presents the artist in three-quarter view with a direct contemplative gaze rendered in a restrained figurative language characteristic of mid-20th-century Soviet painting outside official Socialist Realist conventions. The palette is dominated by warm earth tones, with ochres and muted reds contrasting with the cooler greens and pale whites of the snow-covered exterior. The interior is articulated through simplified architectural framing, while the landscape beyond introduces depth and psychological contrast, creating a balance between interior reflection and exterior quietude. The paint surface displays deliberate brushwork and softened contours, emphasizing mood and introspection rather than formal idealization. Signed at the lower right "Штейнберг" in Cyrillic. The verso bears a hand-written inscription in Russian reading "Штейнберг И.Ð. МоÑква 1950 г. Ðвтопортрет.". translating to "Steinberg I.A. Moscow 1950, self-portrait." Presented on its original stretcher.
