  Marcel K. Sessler (American, 20th C.)
  "The Black Crater"
  Oil on Masonite. Signed and dated (1955) lower right.
  Exhibition label verso from the Norton Gallery of Art in Palm Beach Florida. Awarded the Goldie Paley award in Palm Beach Art League, 1955.
  The painting is housed in its original frame of grey washed wood typical of the 1950?s.

  Marcel K. Sessler was an American modernist landscape painter who worked in the mid 20th century. He was a member of the Florida Artists Group and lived in Sarasota, Florida for many years. He is in the permanent collection of the Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Cornell University as well as the Dartmouth College Collection.
  
  Black Crater is a shield volcano in the Western Cascades in Deschutes County, Oregon. Located near McKenzie Pass, the volcano has a broad conical shape with gentle slopes. The volcano likely formed during the Pleistocene and has not been active within the last 50,000 years. Eruptive activity at the volcano produced mafic lava flows made of basaltic andesite and olivine basalt; it also formed a number of cinder cones. A normal fault occurs on the western side of the volcano, trending north?south. The volcano has been eroded by glaciers, which carved a large cirque into the northeastern flank of the mountain, forming its current crater.
