Steve Ferguson (American, B. 1946) "Rockwell OV-10 Bronco" Signed lower left. Original Acrylic painting on Cold Press Illustration Board.
Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation.
This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood Commemorative Cover for the OV-10 Bronco dated July 16, 1998.
The Rockwell OV-10 Bronco was designed in response to a joint request from the U.S. Air Force and the U.S. Marine Corps for an armed tactical reconnaissance plane. On July 16, 1965, the first Bronco took flight. Two turboprop, 715 horsepower engines propelled the small aircraft at a maximum speed of 280 mph for a range of 600 miles. A total of 271 Broncos were produced for the U.S. armed forces, including 157 for the U.S. Air Force and 114 for the Marine Corps. In addition, close to 100 more of these close-surveillance aircraft were manufactured for the foreign air forces of Germany, Venezuela, Thailand and Indonesia. U.S. Marine Corps Observation Squadron 2, operating from Da Nang in South Vietnam, was the first armed force to successfully use the Bronco in combat.
