EXCEPTIONAL DEVOTIONAL SCULPTURE AGONY IN THE GARDEN, SIGNED C. 1875 An exquisite patinated copper sculpted grouping of the Agony in the Garden, circa 1875 by noted French goldsmith and sculptor Léonard Morel-Ladeuil (French 1820 -1888), signed (incised) on base Morel-Ladeuil. Sculpted in half round with exquisite detail, deep folds and cascading hair. Here Christ is depicted kneeling in the Garden of Gethsemane while two angel attend Him one holding a chalice (cup), resting atop a half circular overhanging base supported by olive branches, palms and a cross and mounted on a shaped stained oak plaque support with cross finial. The sculpture 13.5 inches in height (34.2cm), overall including wood plaque support 19.25 inches (49cm).
The exceptional modeling, detail and craftsmanship readily displayed in the offered lot clearly explains why it is that Morel met with such wide approval as he launched his career. While Napoleon III was an acknowledged admirer, his competitors were openly jealous of his success and particularly annoyed that someone so young could achieve the success that was typically accorded to those who labored for years at their craft. Not only was Morel an excellent craftsman when it came to sculpture he was also an innovator when it came repousse, and plating. He is most well-known for his instantly recognizable masterpieces, “Milton Shield” and the Helicon Vase.
