RARE CIVIL WAR TERRA COTTA BATTLE TOKENS, CIRCA 1875-1880. Comprising a terra cotta brick with relief sculpted cannon beneath the words “MALVERN HILL” and flanked by the date July 1st, 1862. Length 8.5 inches. Together with a terra cotta relief sculpted monument depicting a standing Union soldier within a slightly arched reserve, beneath a clover corps insignia and the base impressed “15th Mass”, and the sides “Gettysburg, July 3rd, 1863”, base of verso with impressed maker’s mark of “Speese & Co., Gettysburg, PA”. Height 8.25 inches. Extremely rare.
Such souvenirs were advertised on the pottery's business cards as "Gettysburg Battlefield Miniature Monument, / Fac-Similes of the Monuments, / Made from Material from the most Historical Portions of the Field. / THEY ARE IN THEMSELVES RELICS" (Lasansky, Central Pennsylvania Redware 1780-1904, pp. 18-19).
