Lybrand / Painter at G. ? / Washington, DC" on original label attached verso. Housed in original molded wood frame with gold-painted surface. Late 19th/early 20th century. 9 3/4" x 13 3/4" sight, 14 1/2" x 18 1/2" OA. Provenance: From a private Loudoun Co., VA collection. Catalogue Note: Little is known about the artist Andrew Lybrand, though he appears to have worked in Washington, DC area at the end of the 19th century and into the 20th century. Another example by the artist in a private collection is signed and dated "1920" and features an African-American man and boy standing by a rural cabin with country road, split-rail fence, and corn shocks in nearby field.
