NEW YORK MERCHANT'S STONEWARE PRODUCT JAR, salt-glazed, approximately half-pint capacity, cylindrical form with slight shoulder and rounded mouth, Albany-slip glazed interior. Lightly stamped "TODE BROS / 272 BOWERY / NEW YORK", additionally stamped "TB" within a circle under base. Probably to hold oysters or snuff. Circa 1870-1880. 4 1/4" H, 2 7/8" D rim. Provenance: The collection of Ronnie and Neal Kite of Esmont, VA. Catalogue Note: The Tode Brothers operated a grocery store at 272 Bowery in New York City near the waterfront in the 1870s and 1880s.
