PENNSYLVANIA, PROBABLY LANCASTER CO., FOLK ART PRESENTATION DRAWING / REWARD OF MERIT, watercolor and ink on paper, an unusual vertical panel with tripartite divisional arrangement, depicting three distelfinks, each perched on a branch, the upper and lower examples with flowering tulip at tip of branch. Period inscription verso (paper) for "William Zartman / 1837". Mounted on rice(?) paper and housed under glass in a period paint-decorated frame (possibly cut down). Circa 1837. 2 7/8" x 7" sight, 9 3/8" x 5 1/8" OA. Provenance: From an Alexandria, VA private collection. Catalogue Note: This reward of merit was likely given to William Zartman (born c. 1830) of Warwick, Lancaster Co., Pennsylvania. William married Anna Getzinger in 1860, and Lutheran church records indicate the couple remained in Warwick for most, if not all, of their lives.
