A large collection of correspondence written by Hollywood icon Hedy Lamarr to her lover Captain Thomas H. McGlaughlin, including over 25 letters and 15 greeting cards. The letters deal primarily with Lamarr’s love for McGlaughlin and her severe dissatisfaction that he will not become as romantically involved with her as she desires, due to what she considers his fear of commitment. One letter reads, “Forgive me for writing to you like this – but I must! You make me feel so alive, so young, so beautiful…” In another letter Lamarr mentions the torpedo guidance system she helped invent, the technology of which would later influence Wi-Fi and Bluetooth applications. Most of the letters are written in red ink on stationery from the Hotel Blackstone in New York City and were posted in 1968, 1969, and 1970. Contact between Lamarr and McGlaughlin ended but was later re-established, and some correspondence continued to occur later mainly in the form of holiday cards sent during the 1980s and 1990s, ending with a few items mailed in 1996, less than four years before Lamarr’s death. The collection also includes over 10 candid photographs of Lamarr, several of which contain inscriptions from her, as well as telegrams, newspaper clippings, and other documents and ephemera.
