Ca. 1890 - Sizeable and heavy cast yellow metal knob elaborately modeled and chased with a widening and flattened coronet-like top personalized with large flowery “JGC” initials embedded in a round shield of opaque dark blue enamel. The latter is surrounded by a wreath-like frame of turquoise repeating scales and a white ring attached to a red centering circle insinuating jewels. This part extends over a longer octagonal paneled base embellished with repeating micro-detailed decorations that recall sacral and Gothic revival themes. In addition, the panels alternate with two well-matched combinations of vividly colored enamel. Most likely a commemorating special order manufactured in a small series of a few examples, this knob reflects great Historicism Design. Its sketch expresses a diversity of themes in the context of its day and is brilliantly adapted to the requirements of the modern world. The knob survived flawlessly with its initial gently faded gilt surface and is graced by a fitly and richly hued rosewood shaft and a horn ferrule. H. 2 ¼”, O.L. 36 ½”
