Ca. 1880
Well-crafted and elegantly chased, the smaller horse head displays all the distinctive traits of a noble creature, including its long head with a slightly convex profile.
It is depicted with a bridle and an integral collar featuring a wider panel of dense scrolls on one side and a blank escutcheon on the other, framed by a matched pair of raised rings with wires and crossbands.
The delicate, detailed modeling leans toward the restrained 18th-century taste and is executed with smooth relief to maximize a good feel in the wearer’s hand.
Two clear hallmarks, a first triangular one with a clear “Ph.” and “P”, and another angular one with an “N.S.”, deserve some attention for exact identification.
The selection of a dense rosewood shaft with natural red hues and a satin finish, heeled with a horn ferrule, further enhances the handle’s quality.
