Graphite on paper, signed LL, Ca 1914. 23 cm W by 29 Cm H, 9" W by 1 1.5 " H, Verso stamps: RSFSR Institute, Moscow Cyrillic) and Darius Tale Yar Khan, 31 Pont Street, London SW ! England. Provenance: Russian Institute RSFSR, Darius TalYar Khan British Collection - obtained prior to 1946, TalYar Khan Estate Sale. Private British Art Dealer, Private Collection Virginia, USA. Also listed on a 1962 inventory when TalYarKhan presented works to Christies Liubov Sergeevna Popova , Born: 1889 - Iwanowskoje, Russia, Died: 1924 - Moscow, Russia, Known for: Non-objective, cubist painting-construction, industrial design, ceramics, posters, Name variants: Ljubow Popowa, Lioubov Popva The creator of what she termed "Painterly Architectonics" and "Painterly Constructions," Popova remains one of the most important female figures in Russian Modernism. As a young woman, she traveled to France, Italy, and throughout her native Russia. She studied the Renaissance works and icons in the churches of Pskov and Novgorod along with the avante-garde ideas of Futurism and Constructivism. Popova's work reflects a flatness that is borrowed from religious icons and Cubism combined with dynamism and a strong sense of movement. She then began to create what she called "Spatial Force Constructions" which were preparatory sketches for material constructions and by 1921 she devoted herself completely to industrial design.
