Attributed to Louis Valtat (French, 1869–1952)
Still LifeAn oil painting on canvas, attributed to Louis Valtat, signed at the lower right. Measuring approximately 11 1/2 x 29 in. (canvas) and 25 x 29 in. overall with frame, the composition depicts a still life rendered with bold coloration and confident brushwork. The handling of paint, marked by rhythmic strokes and rich tonal contrasts, recalls Valtat’s Fauvist sensibilities, emphasizing decorative vibrancy over strict naturalism. The canvas appears to predate its more modern frame.

Louis Valtat (1869–1952) was a French painter associated with the Fauvist movement and admired for his bold use of color and vigorous handling of paint. Educated at the École des Beaux-Arts and the Académie Julian in Paris, Valtat was a close contemporary of Pierre Bonnard and Édouard Vuillard, and he shared exhibitions with Henri Matisse and other Fauves in the early 20th century. His oeuvre spans landscapes, portraits, and still lifes, each distinguished by expressive color harmonies and structural strength. Today, Valtat’s works are represented in major museums, including the Musée d’Orsay in Paris, and remain sought after by collectors worldwide.Have a similar item to sell?
