Oil on canvasSigned lower right by the artist, titled and dated on the reverse Black Holes, London, 1983. Measuring approximately 81 5/8 x 50 5/8 in., and 83 x 52 1/4 in. overall with frame, this monumental composition exemplifies Chandra’s late-career synthesis of abstraction and figuration. The work’s pulsating energy, rhythmic patterning, and luminous spatial fields reflect the artist’s enduring fascination with cosmology, sensuality, and the metaphysical.

Avinash Chandra (1931–1991) was a pioneering figure in post-independence Indian modernism. Born in Shimla, India, and educated at Delhi Polytechnic, he later moved to London in 1956, where his work evolved toward an expressive abstraction characterized by sensual linework and vibrant color. Chandra exhibited widely, including at the Tate Gallery and the Royal Academy, and represented Britain at the 1962 Venice Biennale. His paintings often explore themes of cosmic energy, fertility, and spiritual transcendence—bridging Indian iconography and Western modernist experimentation.Disclaimer: Market Auctions believes this work to be from the hand of the artist.
