Artist Bio
Avinash Chandra (1931–1991) was a pioneering figure in post-independence Indian modernism. Born in Shimla, India, and educated at Delhi Polytechnic, he later moved to London in 1956, where his work evolved toward an expressive abstraction characterized by sensual linework and vibrant color. Chandra exhibited widely, including at the Tate Gallery and the Royal Academy, and represented Britain at the 1962 Venice Biennale. His paintings often explore themes of cosmic energy, fertility, and spiritual transcendence—bridging Indian iconography and Western modernist experimentation.
