Numbered 8/9 and signed by the artist at the lower right, the work exemplifies Tarkay’s celebrated figurative style, characterized by graceful female subjects depicted in contemplative poses within richly patterned interiors. Itzchak Tarkay (1935–2012) was an Israeli painter and printmaker whose work is celebrated for its vibrant palette, elegant line, and depictions of sophisticated women in dreamlike settings. Born in Subotica, Yugoslavia, Tarkay survived internment during World War II before emigrating to Israel in 1949. He studied at the Avni Institute of Art in Tel Aviv and developed a distinctive style influenced by French Impressionism, Post-Impressionism, and Fauvism. Tarkay achieved international recognition through his paintings, watercolors, and serigraphs, which are held in major private collections worldwide. His art continues to be admired for its timeless elegance and romantic vision.
