Artist Bio
Roy Lichtenstein (1923–1997) was a central figure of the American Pop Art movement, acclaimed for his comic-inspired imagery and pioneering use of commercial printing techniques in fine art. Born in New York, he gained international recognition in the 1960s with works such as Whaam! and Drowning Girl, which borrowed directly from comic book panels. His bold lines, primary colors, and iconic Ben-Day dots blurred the boundaries between high and low art, elevating popular culture into the realm of fine art. Throughout his career, Lichtenstein expanded his scope to include landscapes, still lifes, and art-historical references, consistently reinterpreting tradition with irony and precision. His works are now housed in nearly every major museum collection and remain enduring icons of postwar American art.
