A Set of Four George III Sterling Silver Candlesticks
London, 1806 and 1819
Makers: John Mewburn (two, 1806) and William Bruce (two, 1819)
Each of quatrefoil base form, with quilted decoration throughout and fluted sockets. A well-matched set of four, representing two periods of manufacture during the late Georgian era. The bases and shafts display elegant repoussé and chased work, exemplifying the refinement of early 19th-century English silver candlesticks.
Dimensions: 11 3/4 x 5 5/8 in. each
Total Weight: approx. 175.84 troy oz.
Condition: Overall good; minor wear consistent with age and use.
Provenance: Sotheby’s, New York, April 12, 1994, Sale 6546, Lot 232.
Context
Georgian silver candlesticks were central to the formal dining table, prized for their harmonious proportions and fine workmanship. The present set, combining examples by John Mewburn (active in London from 1790) and William Bruce (active in the early 19th century), reflects both the neoclassical sensibility and the enduring demand for elegant lighting implements in aristocratic households. Sets of four are particularly desirable, and the documented Sotheby’s provenance enhances both the historical and collectible value of this group.
