Elisa Tenenbaum received her MFA from the Hartford Art School and her work has recently been exhibited at Haven Palm Beach and at the Stern Gallery in Santa Fe, NM. Her work is in over 200 private and corporate collections and appears in advertising print, product labels, and magazine/newspaper illustrations. She is the recipient of two faculty research grants from Central Connecticut State University.

I have always had an affection for classical urns and finials, particularly those that have artichoke or pineapple shapes. Additionally, I am attracted to the Palm Beach Regency Style which includes the flamboyant, whimsical Asian influence of Chinoiserie. In my sideline crafting business, I make collaged and decoupaged oyster and clam shells. These are represented and sold at various stores and galleries along the east coast. I had the idea and the urge to “marry” the shells with the urns and Chinoiserie to make tabletop-sized sculptures. The sculpture starts with a found object, in this case a brass urn. Each of the individually decoupaged and painted shells is glued (plumbers’ glue) onto the urn. I find Asian style brass handles and screw them on. Gold-painted shells are also added. There is a tongue-in-cheek element to the imagery as much of it includes images of Asian urns and seashells!
