Born in 1887 in Vitebsk, Russia into a working-class family, Marc Chagall knew he was destined for great things. Chagall was celebrated for his dreamlike, color-rich compositions that defied modernist trends in favor of a deeply personal, poetic vision. During his career, he completed major commissions for institutions like the Paris Opera House and Lincoln Center.
