Shahzia Sikander is renowned for revolutionizing Central and South Asian manuscript painting traditions, pioneering the neo-miniature movement. Born in Lahore, Pakistan, she earned a BFA from the National College of Arts in 1991 and an MFA from the Rhode Island School of Design in 1995. Her early work, The Scroll (1989–90), gained national acclaim and helped introduce miniature painting into contemporary art. Over the past two decades, Sikander’s practice has expanded to include painting, media, and large-scale sculpture, elevating South Asian art as a contemporary American tradition. She has held solo exhibitions at major institutions such as the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Hirshhorn Museum, and the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao. Her work has also been featured in international biennials, including Venice, Istanbul, and Sharjah. Sikander has received numerous prestigious awards, including the 2023 Pollock Prize for Creativity and a MacArthur Fellowship in 2006. Recent public projects include monumental bronze sculptures in Manhattan and Houston and a digital animation at Moynihan Train Hall. In 2024, a survey exhibition of her work will be presented in Venice during Biennale Arte and in Cleveland and Cincinnati in 2025.
