Exclusive on Bidsquare Lot #09: Jason Yi
Trails of North Star 02
Spray foam, wood, and paint
42 x 21 x 25 in.
Jason Yi's conceptually driven work takes the form of sculpture and site-specific installation. Born and raised in Seoul until the age of eleven, Yi has a bi-cultural orientation and an appreciation for humble materials that often inform his art. Addressing contemporary fears and political uncertainties, his most recent work depicts plumes or trails of smoke from missile launches. Their trailing smoke is both visually alluring and a harbinger of tragedy. Trails of North Star 02
refers specifically to the North Korean missile "North Star," which is capable of reaching distant nations. Yi molded this piece from black insulation foam; its light weight adds to a perception of airiness.
Yi has exhibited nationally in Chicago, Los Angeles, New York, Philadelphia, Washington, DC, and internationally in Japan, China, Korea, Vietnam, Italy, and Austria. His awards include the Kamiyama Artist in Residence Fellowship, sponsored by the Japan Foundation (2003), Mary L. Nohl Fellowship (2007), and the Joan Mitchell Foundation Painters & Sculptors Grant (2014).
