Lot #47: Stephanie Trenchard Tall Coated Woman, 2019 and Weekend in Door County
22 x 5 1/4 x 4 1/2 in.
Sculptural figures-artists, writers, even the humble commuter-enclosed in glass is the signature style of Stephanie Trenchard. Tall Coated Woman is part of her Coated Women on the Precipice series of the last two years. Inspired by artists Sonia Delaunay, Viola Frey, and Alice Neel, these sculptures explore the modern woman trapped in social norms defining femininity.
Trenchard's demanding fabrication process requires creating the glass figure, painting it with enamels, then encasing it in sand-cast glass. Trenchard's work has earned a number of awards and is in many private and public collections. She has taught at Corning Museum of Glass (New York), Gerrit Rietveld Academie (Amsterdam), Bangkok Glass (Thailand), Pratt Fine Art Center (Seattle), University of Wisconsin, and others. She and her husband, artist Jeremy Popelka, own and operate a hot glass studio in Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin, where they also teach classes.
