One of the most impressive and elusive diving helmets made by the A. Schrader's Son Company is the five-bolt model. Characterized by the five large bolts along the helmet's neck ring that held it together, relatively few of these have survived. Unlike the traditional threaded helmet models, this design relied on the five large bolts to secure the bonnet and breastplate together. In the 21st Century, these "bolt" helmets are prized for their unique appearance, design, and rarity.
This helmet features a wonderful, consistent dark red patina to its copper body. The heavy brass hardware also has a warm patina throughout. Typical working dents can be found on the top of the bonnet, with none being severe. Some imperfections in the copper above the neck on the bonnet can be found upon close inspection. All five of the large wing nuts on the five bolts work correctly. All of the glass is intact. The faceplate plate glass is cracked, but still solid. On the breastplate, one of the wing nuts ears is broken off, but it still threads on and off with ease. Other original brass hardware externally is all present and in good condition. The original vents inside the bonnet have been removed.
The helmet's brass ID plate has the number 604 stamped into it. The style of the ID plate and number places its date of manufacture to approximately 1913. On the bonnet neck ring, A. Schraders Son is stamped. The breastplate neck ring is stamped New York. This style of stamping is fairly unusual based on our experience.
All diving helmets in this auction will be accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from Nations Attic. This information will be kept on permanent file at Nations Attic and help ensure the provenance of the helmet and authenticity. The display stand shown in the photos is not included. The option to purchase one after the auction will be provided.
