- Lot Description
This exceptional commercial diver's helmet was produced by arguably the most famous American helmet maker of the time, the A.J. Morse & Son Company in Boston, Massachusetts. A prime example of early 20th-century design, it features the characteristic elements of that era. Stamped with serial number 1845 on the bonnet, breastplate neck rings, and all four brails, this helmet's manufacture can be accurately dated to circa 1914. Remarkably, after 111 years, it remains a complete and original serial number-matching set.
The helmet retains its four serial numbered brails, twelve wing nuts, four copper brail shims, communications cup stamped Craftsweld, communications fitting, exhaust, air fitting, AJ Morse non-return valve, spring loaded safety pin, glass, port guards, neck ring gasket, original brass ID plate, three removable eyelets, exhaust chin button, very old reproducer (speaker) and a single copper internal air vent.
This helmet tells a story of practical use and adaptation, a common characteristic of vintage diving gear. Like many helmets used by commercial divers that saw extensive service, it underwent modifications based on a diver's preferences. The presence of a Craftsweld communications cup and fitting on the back indicates the addition of a communication system (uncommon when the helmet was originally made). Furthermore, the original internal air vents were replaced by a single copper pipe vent, aimed to provide direct airflow across the front faceplate. In a somewhat unusual design decision, this added pipe now partially obscures the top port window.
This helmet bears the undeniable marks of a long and industrious career, undoubtedly serving on countless underwater tasks across decades. Its beautiful copper body proudly displays the typical scars of hard work – numerous dents and small, expertly executed hole repairs. Subtle modifications to its brass components further whisper tales of its working life. Today, this veteran of the depths shows minor signs of its age, including a cracked glass on the diver's left side port, two missing faceplate studs, and a missing gasket. To preserve its earned patina, a clear lacquer was applied after its active service concluded.

All diving helmets in this auction will be accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from Nations Attic. The certificate will have a unique number that matches the number on a tamper-proof hologram decal placed inside the helmet. This information will be kept on permanent file at Nations Attic and help ensure the provenance of the helmet and authenticity.
All items will be shipped with a signature required upon delivery and full insurance either via FedEx or the USPS Priority Mail. Worldwide shipping is available; however, no ocean freight will be offered on large items. DHL express is an option for international shipments under 600 pounds via air. A shipping quote prior to the auction can be provided by emailing your postal code.

Shipping fees listed with each lot pertain to domestic shipping only (contiguous or lower 48). International bidders are subject to higher shipping fees. Purchased items will be shipped on a first paid, first shipped basis and may take up to twenty (20) business days for said shipment to leave our (Nations Attic, Inc.) business. For time sensitive shipments, we (Nations Attic, Inc.) will expedite payment processing and shipping for a nominal fee. Items paid for by personal check are subject to a ten (10) business day hold for funds clearance. All domestic mainland items are shipped via FedEx ground or via USPS unless otherwise specified or requested by the customer. International shipments are shipped via DHL Express or FedEx Express. USPS is no longer used for international shipments due to issues with tracking packages. Insurance: All items are insured for the full purchase amount less carrier shipping charges, or the maximum amount allowed by the carrier and/or country of destination. Insurance is included in the specified shipping amount listed in the shipping section of the final invoice pricing. All invoices are sent with insurance already factored into the shipping charge. The customer has the right to waive any insurance amount by providing written consent that the customer will not hold Nations Attic, Inc. or its shipping carriers responsible for damaged and/or lost shipments due to uninsured/under insured packages. In some instances, we (Nations Attic, Inc.) reserve the right to only ship certain items if insurance is purchased for the full amount of the item(s) being shipped.
