This is a classic Morse Diving Equipment Co helmet made at the height of World War 2. While many US Navy Mark V helmets were made during the war, very few commercial helmets were produced for obvious reasons. This helmet is one of those rare few that have survived in this wonderful original condition!
Morse referred to this helmet model as their Three-Light Sectional Screw helmet. Starting in the 1930s, Morse would use oval ports on the sides in a horizontal configuration. This gave Morse helmets a unique and identifiable appearance.
This helmet features serial number 4661 on both neck rings and all four brails, making it a full serial number-matching hat. This number is also what allows for it dating. The helmet also features on the front of the breastplate a rarely seen Morse Diving Equipment Co., Inc. brass ID plate. Unlike most Morse ID plates, this one is in a long, narrow style.
This helmet is complete with its original hardware, which includes the glass, port guards, exhaust, four brails, twelve wing nuts, spring-loaded safety pin, air fitting elbow, communications fitting, internal exhaust chin button, air vents, neck ring gasket, and period reproducer (speaker). The two halves of the helmet thread together with ease, as well as the faceplate.
This helmet proudly wears its original patina and typical working dents on the top of the bonnet. The telltale signs of the leather straps rubbing the finish on the breastplate are evident, which we love to see.
Compared to the Mark V helmets made during World War 2, this model made during the war can easily be considered quite rare. Its wonderful original appearance and being in complete condition make this a special helmet worthy of anyone's collection!
All diving helmets in this auction will be accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from Nations Attic. The certificate will have a unique number that will match the number on a tamperproof hologram decal placed inside the helmet.
