- Lot Description
When conjuring the image of what a classic English diving helmet looks like, the 6 bolt Admiralty Pattern helmet made by Siebe Gorman comes to mind. Siebe Gorman started making the first diving helmets in the 1830s in London, England. The company would continue to invent innovative new designs and technology for diving. Their helmets would be used by the Royal Navy and its many colonies throughout the 19th and 20th Centuries. The Admiralty Pattern was the Royal Navy's primary deep water helmet in the 20th Century.
This fantastic helmet is a style primarily used by the Royal Navy before, during, and after World War 2. The helmet features the original Siebe Gorman brass ID plate. Siebe Gorman would stamp serial numbers into the inside neck ring of the bonnet & breastplate. They would also place a number on the front window frame and the bottom side of the two brails or straps. The serial #13064 is stamped on all five locations, a full number matching example from the 1938!
Of important note, the the frame of the faceplate also features a broad arrow stamp. This proves the helmet was in the Royal Navy inventory and no doubt part of the war effort!
The standard configuration for this model utilized oval windows on the side and a round threaded window on the front. The 6-bolt pattern only requires two brails rather than the four found on 12 bolt helmets. The back of the bonnet features the original air and communications fittings. When looking at vintage photos of English military hardhat divers, there is an excellent chance this very model is what you will find being utilized.
The helmet is in excellent original unrestored condition, perfect for display in the home or office. The copper body and brass hardware exhibit a wonderful, consistent patina. Surprisingly, a large majority of the factory-applied tinning remains on the copper body. The helmet is complete with all its glass, 6 wing nuts, 2 brails, exhaust valve, air fitting, spitcock valve, dumbbell safety latch, window guards, and internal air vents. The top of the bonnet is free of any notable dents as well!
This helmet exhibits a classic English look and beauty. Such a nice example with a broad arrow stamp rarely turn up often, especially in the American market. One that served during WW2 is even more special.
The display stand shown in the photos is not included. The option to purchase one after the auction will be provided.
All diving helmets in this auction will be accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from Nations Attic. The certificate will have a unique number that will match the number on a tamperproof hologram decal placed inside the helmet. This information will be kept on permanent file at Nations Attic and help ensure the provenance of the helmet and authenticity.
All items will be shipped with a signature required upon delivery and full insurance either via FedEx or the USPS Priority Mail. Worldwide shipping is available; however, no ocean freight will be offered on large items. DHL express is an option for international shipments under 600 pounds via air. A shipping quote prior to the auction can be provided by emailing your postal code.

Shipping fees listed with each lot pertain to domestic shipping only (contiguous or lower 48). International bidders are subject to higher shipping fees. For time sensitive shipments, we (Nations Attic, Inc.) will expedite payment processing and shipping for a nominal fee. Items paid for by personal check are subject to a ten (10) business day hold for funds clearance. All domestic mainland items are shipped via FedEx ground or via USPS unless otherwise specified or requested by the customer. International shipments are shipped via DHL Express or FedEx Express. USPS is no longer used for international shipments due to issues with tracking packages. Insurance: All items are insured for the full purchase amount less carrier shipping charges, or the maximum amount allowed by the carrier and/or country of destination. Insurance is included in the specified shipping amount listed in the shipping section of the final invoice pricing. All invoices are sent with insurance already factored into the shipping charge. The customer has the right to waive any insurance amount by providing written consent that the customer will not hold Nations Attic, Inc. or its shipping carriers responsible for damaged and/or lost shipments due to uninsured/under insured packages.
