Provenance: Inventory of the late Albert Karmely
Dabir of Kashan – Master Weaver and “Dabir ol-Sanayeh” (The Secretary of the Arts) Dabir, often referred to by the honorary title "Dabir ol-Sanayeh,"—which translates to Secretary of the Arts—was a legendary Persian master weaver based in Kashan, one of Iran’s most historically significant weaving centers. Active during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Dabir was renowned for producing some of the finest workshop rugs of the Qajar and early Pahlavi eras, many of which were commissioned for royalty, aristocrats, and international exhibitions. Dabir's carpets are admired for their exquisite balance of color, precision of design, and luxurious materials. He was known for working with fine kork (baby lamb) wool, and occasionally silk, to create highly detailed medallion-and-corner designs, floral arabesques, and refined curvilinear compositions. His use of soft rose, ivory, sapphire blue, and pistachio green became a signature palette that set his work apart. Often signed in the field or borders of the rug, Dabir’s name signifies a level of refinement and craftsmanship synonymous with the golden age of Persian rug production. Today, Dabir Kashan rugs are prized by collectors and museums worldwide as benchmarks of Persian weaving excellence—each piece reflecting the artistic soul of a true master.
This signed Dabir Kashan reveals the mastery of one of Persia’s most esteemed weaving ateliers. A symphony of floral palmettes and medallions, it balances delicate precision with regal presence. Its palette, intricate drawing, and signature placement reflect a weaving tradition rooted in connoisseurship, refinement, and artistic pride.
