- Lot Description
Catherine May, of Boston, Massachusetts, was born in Boston in 1757 to Squire Samuel May and his wife Abigail, residing at the corner of Washington and Davis Streets. Sampler worked in wool threads with bands of alphabets above a pastoral scene with a shepherd , dog and flock,the sheep worked in trapunto, with a woman seated under a tree, her hat beside her, all in front of a large house and grounds, with birds, flowering trees and a butterfly. Signed, Catherine May Ended her Sampler in the Thirteenth Year of Her Age. (1770). 19 x 15 in. 20 x 24 in. as framed Condition: General wear and loss commensurate with age and use, some staining and natural deterioration of wools. Provenance: by descent through the family. The sister sampler, by Catherines' sister Abigail, is in the permanent collection of the Philadelphia Museum (https://philamuseum.org/collections/permanent/120883.html). This sampler was on loan to the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, for a special exhibition.Condition: General wear and loss commensurate with age and use, some staining and natural deterioration of wools.

Available payment options
Invoices are emailed when the auction is complete are required to be paid within five days. We accept bank wire transfers, cash, personal or company checks, and all major credit cards. Payments are accepted through the bidding platform for a 2.8% processing fee assumed by the buyer. If paying by check, Neue Auctions, LLC reserves the right to hold all purchases until the check has cleared to the satisfaction of Neue Auctions, LLC and its bank. Neue Auctions at our discretion, reserves the right to deny credit card purchases by phone. Any credit card payment by phone is subject to a 5% processing fee assumed by the buyer at the discretion of the gallery. We reserve the right to decline payment by credit card for any reason and may request wire payment or check. Payment is required within five days of the auction end date or if a check is mailed, the gallery must be notified. Bidder dispute will be opened if payment is not received within our terms. If paying by check, Neue Auctions, LLC reserves the right to hold all purchases until the check has cleared to the satisfaction of Neue Auctions, LLC and its bank.
