James Abbott McNeil Whistler(American 1834-1903) Hurlingham, 1879, etching and drypoint on laid paper, 4th state, signed with butterfly logo in the plate, lower left, Kennedy 181, matted and framed 5.5 x 7.75 plate size.Â Provenance: Gage Gallery, Cleveland, Ohio.Â Hurlingham is on the river Thames in Fulham, west London, across the river from Wandsworth. Hurlingham Park looks south, across the river, to Wandsworth Park. It was a site where both amateur and professional activities overlapped. Thames barges, boats and tugs as well as rowboats and skiffs crowded the broad river. Hurlingham itself was a sporting venue for London Society, including Royalty, to watch and play polo, while the public could watch boat races from the riverbank. Condition: Light matt burn, minor fading, scattered foxing. One larger spot in right lower margin. 1.5 inch margins all around. Secured to matting with mounting corners.
