Viktor Schreckengost first created this form in plaster in 1931 after photographs his teacher, Paul Bough Travis (American, Cleveland School 1898-1976) brought back with him following his groundbreaking trip to Africa. The bronze depicts Queen Jeddu of the Mangbetu tribe in the Belgian Congo, with whom Travis visited. Legenda, Jeddu's daughter with King Ekibondo is depicted in the lot following (Lot 47). Condition: a few shallow scuffs to the patina on the neck as pictured.
