Bull, Elaine de Kooning (1918–1989, b. Brooklyn, New York), Attributed. Ink on pale green rice paper, depicting a standing bull in profile. Signed “E de K” in ink lower right; undated. Floated on a black backing and framed. American, mid-20th century.
Frame: H 15-1/2 in. W 18-3/4 in.
Paper: H 9-1/2 in. W 13 in.
About the Attributed Artist: Born Elaine Fried in Brooklyn, Elaine de Kooning studied at the Leonardo da Vinci Art School and the American Artists School before joining the circle of Abstract Expressionist painters in New York, where she also wrote influential criticism as an editorial associate at ARTnews. A 1957 trip to the Southwest and the bullfights across the border in Ciudad Juárez produced her celebrated bull series, among them the Denver Art Museum’s monumental Bullfight of 1959, and in 1962 she was commissioned to paint the presidential portrait of John F. Kennedy for the Truman Library. Bulls returned in her final decade, when visits in 1983 to the Paleolithic caves of Lascaux and Altamira inspired her Cave Walls paintings and a late body of ink works on paper.
Overall creasing and cockling to the sheet; small rubbed area below the bull’s muzzle.
