Raimonds Staprans (1926–2026, b. Riga, Latvia), Bottle with Orange. Oil on canvas. Signed and dated 1998 lower right; titled on the reverse. American, 1998.
H 36 in. W 24 in.
About the Artist: Born in Riga, Raimonds Staprans fled Latvia with his family in 1944, spent the postwar years as a refugee in Germany and emigrated to the United States in 1947. He studied at the University of Washington before earning his MFA at the University of California, Berkeley, and settled in San Francisco, where he built a pared-down language of flattened planes and intense, light-saturated color across still lifes, harbor views and architectural subjects, work often grouped with the Bay Area Figurative painters. Also an accomplished playwright whose dramas of twentieth-century Latvia were staged in San Francisco and Riga, he is represented in the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the San Jose Museum of Art and the Latvian National Museum of Art.
Overall excellent.
