- Lot Description
Early 19th century cut-paper silhouette portrait depicting a gentleman in profile, shown wearing a high collar and bow tie typical of the period. The black silhouette is carefully cut and mounted on light toned paper, creating a strong contrast that highlights the refined profile. The portrait is housed in a period wooden frame with a gilt liner and brass hanging ring, with the original wood backing still present. Silhouette portraits such as this were a popular and affordable form of portraiture in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, often created by traveling artists. The piece displays age-related toning and wear consistent with its age and remains an attractive example of early American folk portraiture. Approx. frame size (in): 6.75 x 5.75 x 1.
