- Lot Description
A striking and highly decorative 19th century American wall clock signed “Herman Rick, New York,” featuring an unusual and sculptural lyre-form case. The clock is centered by a gilt dial with Roman numerals and finely pierced hands, including a crescent and star motif, all set within a dramatic sunburst surround composed of carved wooden rays with original gilt surface. Above, an openwork lyre crest with scrolling iron elements and visible rod structure adds to its bold, neoclassical presence. The reverse reveals its original construction and movement housing, consistent with mid-19th century examples. The surface shows significant age and wear, including losses, cracking, and flaking to the gilded decoration, which contributes to its authentic character and visual depth. A rare and eye-catching form, this piece embodies the creativity of early American clockmaking and would serve as a standout decorative object or restoration candidate.
