Striking signed oil on canvas painting dated 1996 and bearing the name Hochhalter, featuring a bold surrealist composition of two stylized figures set within a desert-like landscape with towering cacti and dramatic blue sky. The work displays strong, expressive facial features, flowing hair, and decorative patterned garments with scrolling motifs, rendered in a vivid palette of deep blues, greens, and warm earth tones. The composition evokes elements of modernist and folk-surrealist influences, with an intimate, symbolic interaction between the figures. Signed and dated lower right “Hochhalter 96,” with the title “The Burden” faintly inscribed verso. Housed in a simple black frame; overall good vintage condition with visible surface wear, minor scuffs, and age-related marks consistent with handling and display.
