- Lot Description
Antique Japanese vertical panel painting in the manner of the Maruyama / Shij School, likely dating to the mid-19th century, executed in watercolor on paper and depicting three playful Akita puppies wrestling beneath a trailing vine of blue morning glory blossoms. The composition is rendered with delicate brushwork typical of naturalistic Japanese painting traditions, with careful attention to the animals' expressive faces and soft fur contrasted against the elegant botanical elements above. The work is mounted with decorative borders and presented in a gilt frame behind glass. Visible age-related condition includes scattered bubbles beneath the paper, wrinkles, and light brown lines where the paper sections join, consistent with the age and mounting method. Framed size measures approximately 38 1/2 inches high by 19 1/2 inches wide. Provenance noted as Vallin Gallery. Approx. frame size (in): 48.25 x 29 x 1.5, Approx. painting size (in): 40.25 x 21.
