- Lot Description
A charming late 19th-century oil on canvas painting titled “Babes in the Wood,” signed Nora Chaese and dated 1885, depicting two young children in a tender, sentimental pose within a softly rendered woodland setting. The composition features warm, luminous tones and fine period detailing characteristic of Victorian-era genre painting. The work retains its original canvas and is housed in an elaborate, deeply molded gilt gesso frame with high-relief foliate and scroll decoration, which shows age-appropriate wear, losses, and patina consistent with its age. The verso reveals original stretcher construction and period materials. A brass title plaque is affixed to the frame. Overall, a decorative and evocative antique painting with strong visual appeal, suitable for traditional interiors or collectors of 19th-century sentimental art. Approx. frame size (in): 34.75 x 27.25 x 2.5, Approx. painting size (in): 26.25 x 19.25.
