- Lot Description
An original Japanese woodblock print by Utagawa Kunisada (1786–1865), also known as Toyokuni III, one of the most prolific and celebrated ukiyo-e artists of the Edo period. This charming composition depicts a seated woman in traditional attire alongside an inset Otsu-e style image of a whimsical “cat and mouse” (or cat and rat) scene, a motif rooted in folk painting traditions from Otsu near Kyoto. The print bears Kunisada’s signature and publisher’s seal, consistent with mid-19th century production. The work is presented in a later frame and mat, with visible age toning, creasing, and wear to the paper, along with some fading to pigments, all consistent with its age. The reverse shows an older backing and hanging wire. Despite condition issues, the piece retains strong decorative appeal and represents an accessible example of Kunisada’s work, blending bijin-ga (images of beautiful women) with playful narrative elements drawn from popular culture of the period. A desirable addition for collectors of ukiyo-e and Japanese art. Approx. frame size (in): 21.25 x 15.75 x 0.5, Approx. painting size (in): 14.75 x 9.75.
