This is an incredibly rare opportunity to own a dye tested and confirmed Lac Dyed Navajo Child’s Blanket circa 1850. After much consideration, we convinced the owner of this blanket into getting a professional dye test to confirm our thoughts on its rarity. The dye test was done by Dr. David Wenger, Ph.D., of Thomas Jefferson University, Philadelphia, PA and came back as 100% lac dye, a true rarity (dye test available upon request and in images). This is a fine and tightly woven child’s blanket with dye tested red lac dye, along with indigo blue and handspun white. The petite serape / child's blanket is fresh from a 100+ year-old single-family collection where it was a prized centerpiece. When the Navajo wove blankets for personal use prior to the 1870’s the colors were generally red, white and indigo blue. This blanket is woven in a grid pattern and is very typical of classic period blankets. This pre-reservation blanket is also defined by the color transitions being made by steps rather than the later blankets that used serrated color changes. The corners and edges are nicely intact, however there is evidence of ethnographic wear. No thin spots, no stains, no odors. No evidence of moth intrusion. This is a beautiful example of an early child’s blanket from the classic period with highly desirable dye test confirmed Lac Red. Provenance: From an ex-100+ year old single family collection; comes with a Dr. David Wegner (foremost expert on Navajo dye testing) Dye Test showing a 100% Lac. Measures 53.5-inches by 35-inches.
