This is an exceptional and historic set of circa 1870-1880 Blackfeet Beaded Indian Buffalo Hide men’s warrior leggings from the ex-collection of Terry Winchell at Fighting Bear Antiques; collected from the Blackfoot Indian Reservation in Canada in early 1900. The set is comprised of Indian tanned buffalo hide with a thick Indian tanned buffalo hide strip covered in classic geometric beadwork that is sinew sewn. The hide has an early, bold two-color mineral pigment painted design across both the front and back shows a stripped horizontal bar design in black with yellow ochre / ocher background. The outside edge of the leggings have Indian hide tide old ermine fur tube hides that are wrapped in old red stroud trade clothe with remnants of red plume feather on the ends of the ermines as well as 19th-century original solid brass hawk trade bells and hide fringes. The beadwork shows all 1800’s old glass trade seed beads with a chalk white background with a stepped diagonal pattern in cobalt, greasy green, greasy yellow, red-white heart, showing fine detail with a diagonal tab design all being sinew sewn with little to no bead loss. The set shows both sinew sewing and trade thread and dates to circa 1870-1880’s. The bottom shows a unique triangular bifurcated / forked and fringed drop design at the ankle having a double tab like pattern (two-tab drops on the front and two on the bottom) along with the hide fringes, both with a yellow ochre / ocher finish. There are a few old repairs. Provenance: The set was collected on the Blackfoot Indian Reservation in early 1900 as noted by Terry Winchell; From the ex-collection of Terry Winchell from Fighting Bear Antiques in Jackson, Wyoming where the piece was valued at $18,000; from a private Native American beadwork collection in Jackson, Wyoming. Fighting Bear Antiques paperwork included. These are quite possibly the finest set of Blackfoot men’s hide leggings from the Indian Wars period that have ever been brought to the public market, with these being in very well-preserved museum condition with fantastic collection history. The set is in very good condition with mostly very supple hides and is on a museum display stand for mounting. Overall, the set measures 36-inches long (with the top hide piece and bottom ermine they are 54-inches long) with each being about 13-inches at their widest (without the hide or ermines being spread out, with fringes and hide spread out they extend to at least 20-inches wide). Collected from the Blackfoot / Blackfeet Indian Reservation in Canda in early 1900; Blackfoot Confederacy is also known as the Niitsitapi including the Kainai (Blood), Siksika (Siksikaitsitapi), and Piikani (Peigan). In Canada in a territory that spans southern Alberta to Saskatchewan extending from the Rocky Mountains to the plains.
