This is a fabulous Shinto Period (1596 AD to 1781 AD) to Shinshinto Period (1781 AD to 1876 AD) Japanese “Samurai” Wakizashi (short sword) that was a World War II bring back item from a longtime Montana collection. Wakizashi, which translates to "side inserted," is a Japanese short sword used in close quarters combat, indoors and as a backup weapon. They have blades that range in length from 12 to 24 inches and are intended to be utilized with one hand and paired with a katana. This Wakizashi shows a wrapped fuchi sleeve covering a manta ray skin handle with a metal tsuba (guard), brass habaki (ferrule) and metal kashira (pommel). Tree branch and dragonfly designs adorn the tsuba and pommel. The blade shows a small hi (groove) near the bottom of the blade. Overall the Wakizashi shows good condition with some wear present from its age and use over the years, but no major signs of damage is noted. There is a crack on one side of the manta ray skin handle and the pommel is loose on the bottom. The handle measures 6" L x 1 1/2" W x 3/4" D, while the blade measures 14 3/4" L x 1 1/8" W. It has no scabbard and weighs 1 pound and 2 ounces.
