Farm in Middletown, New JerseyOil on Canvas
David Provost Van Brackle (1823-1922) was born in Union, NJ, 2 miles north of Keyport, and was the youngest of 11 children. He first married Sarah Brown in 1844 and had 3 daughters and 3 sons. He then married Jane Wood (1831-1903) and had a son, Hendrick (1861-1885), a son Millspaugh (1866-?) a daughter Lizzie (1870-?), and a son Elwood (1874-?).
David also ran the general store and was Postmaster, a teacher, and Superintendent of Schools in Middletown / Holmdel, NJ. He was a teacher who taught school for 54 years at the school on Laurel Ave. on the Middletown Holmdel border. He “taught with a switch†according to his student, the painter Henry T. Gulick who told his son Gregory Gulick who told the consignor.
David Provost Van Brackle (1823-1922) had retired in 1904 as a school teacher and an administrator in Middletown, NJ. His school records are in Monmouth County Historical Association (MCHA). His daughter married Daniel Wilson and for a short time he lived with them at the Wilson farm on Old Country Road, north of Middletown Village. He died in 1922 at 99 and was buried in Holmdel.
Van Brackle took up painting late in life. He has left a small body of work that includes scenes of farms, mills, residences, and the America’s Cup yacht races, as well as still life paintings. The majority of his colorful and detailed images depict locations in Middletown within walking distance of the Wilson farm. A number of Van Brackle farm scenes have been laid out with a very acute, angular perspective as if seen through a wide angle lens. Descendants of the artist claimed he suffered from poor eye sight, a fact confirmed by a portrait photograph that shows him with thick eye glasses. A 30 July 1887 article in the Keyport Enterprise notes that “M.L. Terry, the painter, has just finished Daniel Wilson’s house in Middletown. It now looks as white as snow.†(We obtained the above paragraph from MCHA museum written by Joe Hammond).
