John Barclay Crawford (May 22, 1814-Oct. 1840) was the first resident minister of the Dutch Reformed Church of Kings Highway, Middletown. The Crawfords were early settlers of Middletown and lived in a large house on a hill opposite the Dutch Reformed Church in the 4th Ward in Middletown. The house burned down and then the Beekman family lived there until their burned in the early 1970s. John B. Crawford was the son of George Crawford (1787-1822) and Sarah Dickerson (1790-1810) and who lived in Hopewell Farm, Crawford Township, Orange County, NY. Daniel Shafer lived extremely close to James Crawford, father of Hellen Crawford, who made the 1835 Crawford sampler as they are only four entries apart in the Census of 1860 for the town of Crawford. John B. Crawford's mother, Sarah Dickerson Crawford was a sister of Benjamin J. Dickerson who married Magdalena Shafer who was a sister of George Shafer, Sarah Shafer's father. Sarah Shafer's aunt was thus married to John B. Crawford's uncle.
