Needlework on linen Wrought by Joanna Woolson (1799-1842)Cape May County, New Jersey, C. 1808.
Joanna Woolson was born October 3, 1799 in Burlington, NJ. She married Leaming Ewing in Cape May, March 19, 1821. He was a Mayflower descendant. Before their marriage, Leaming served in the local militia in defense of the NJ coast during the War of 1812. He was a teacher and later a farmer in Cape May. The Ewings lived in Cold Spring, Cape May County today which is a historical village about just north Cape May. They had 8 children with the first two dying young. Two of their sons fought in the Civil War with one losing his life after being wounded. Joanna died in 1842 and Leaming married the widow of his half brother, Robert, and had one more child.
Leaming lived until at least 1860. In the 1860 NJ Federal Census he was unmarried.
