Papua New Guinea Hook Figure
Iatmul figurative suspension hook called « samban » (Middle Sepik river, Papua New Guinea). This hook is composed by an axis in a human form and a pointed crescent as a using part. A quarter of the crescent is missing. The axis is shaped as a naked and muscled man. He wears traditional scarification which proves he is an initiate (« crocodile-man » : crocodile is the greater ancestor in the Iatmul beliefs). His face is strong and has eyes made by cowrie, one is missing. Usually the samban show a female figure, this one with a man is probably more for daily use (or as a souvenir handcraft) than for sacred use.
With the hook, we add two African ethnographic items : an Akan « Akua'ba » figure mounted in modern oval frame and a stool, probably made by Senufo.
Metal stand for the hook.
