Queen Anne Walnut Slant Front Desk
New Jersey, Possibly Somerset County, 1740-1760.
Underside of prospect door with pencil inscriptions of names; Dawes, Sutphin and Henry (all Somerset County residents).
It has owner's stamps (D C P) on the interior of the desk. The bottom of the drawer in the prospect section has sums in pounds, shillings and pence; 21 0 0 + 3 10 0 + 0176 + 1 3 4 +3 10 0= 30 0 10 + 2 4 0 = 32 4 10, and under these sums are three names with sums next to them as: m= Dawes 22 0 0 Sutpin 11 0 0 Henry 21 0 0. A grand sum of the total is made: 86 4 10, perhaps debts or amounts owed to the owner of the desk. In another corner, 10 10 is subtracted from 28 0 0, yielding 17 10 0. Looking up the above names from 1750 to 1810 in the Somerset County, NJ census and tax records shows: Dawes in Bridgewater, Henry in Bedminster, Sutpin (or Sutphin) in Hillsborough and Western Precinct, now Montgomery Township. These names tend to support the statement that John Walton found the desk in Somerville, the Somerset County seat (The desk and the Walton statement are in the catalog Early Furniture Made in New Jersey: 1690-1870at the Newark Museum). Somerville is no more than 10 miles from these towns.
