Rooster Ciphering Book Page
A page from a ciphering book. Circa 1840.
On the back of the page, which is covered up, is the mathematical formula for dividing a trapezoid into four equal parts. The pencil drawing on the front illustrates a trapezoid with line segments labeled from A-S to divide the figure into four equal parts. In the bottom half of the paper on the left side is a large orange house with five windows with blue shutters, a small window in the attic, and a blue door. A green willow tree grows by the door of the house. There are two pointed cedar trees behind the house and five small pointed cedar trees on the hilly lawn. In front of the trees is a very large rooster with a colorful tail walking between two slightly smaller gray and brown chickens. In the foreground is a very small, white dog with brown spots and a very small man sitting on a stool while fishing in his top hat in a green colored lake. In the top left side of the painting in very light pencil is written, "Richard". An old, red stained frame is on the painting.
Another ciphering page that is similar to this example and probably by the same person depicts a farmer protecting his flock and was sold at Sotheby's on Oct. 15, 1999, Lot 243.
