Stoneware Jug
Attributed to Morgan, Van Wickle and Green Pottery, Old Bridge, NJ, 1805-1809.
Captain James Morgan worked in Cheesequake, an area along the Raritan Bay from 1775-1784. Captain Morgan died 1784. His son James Morgan was a line officer in the Revolutionary War and later on in the militia and he captured the British brigantine “Ann & May†near Long Branch. He became a Major General in the NJ militia and a member of the US Congress from 1811-1813. General James Morgan was born 1756 and married Catherine Van Broekel and when she died in 1802, he married Ann S. Van Wickle. A manager, perhaps William Crolius, ran the pottery for him after 1784 until he should the land in 1801. In 1805, General Morgan, Van Wickle’s brother-law, started another pottery in Old Bridge that used to be know as Herbertsville, then South River Bridge, with Jacob Van Wickle, and the potter, Branch Green. Nicholas Van Wickle, Jacob Van Wickles’ son, was a potter and the pottery business might have been established for Nichlas to run with Branch Green. Nicholas married General Morgan’s daughter, Ida. Green stayed until 1809 when he left to establish his own pottery in Philadelphia. The pottery in Old Bridge ended in 1827. In 1805 a one-gallon jug cost 31 cents.
