Conover Family Freehold Area Candlestand: Simple candlestands of this particular form appear frequently among the old families of Freehold, Monmouth County, NJ. Details that tie the group together are the legs made from boards of uniform thickness that are then chamfered on their upper edge, the articulation of the simple vase-shaped pedestal turning, deep decorative notches in the pedestal base between the legs, and the fixed top that does not swivel or tilt.
Provenance: The candlestand as well as most the furniture descended in the Conover family of Freehold, NJ
Ebenezer Conover (1782-1857) m. Mary Lefferson and he was establishing his family at the time the furniture was made. Then it passed down to his son,
William E. Conover (1815-1891) m. Charlotte Baker, lived in Freehold;
to his son Ebenezer Conover (1842-1868) m. Evalina Hartshorne, lived in Freehold. However Ebenezer died the same year his son, Warren H., was born. The furniture was not inherited by Ebenezer but passed from William E. directly to Warren H. who was raised by his grandfather, William E. Conover;
Warren H. Conover (1868-1955) married Annie B. Conover and was the architect of MCHA Headquarters, then it passed down to his daughter;
Eleanor Conover Millard, it passed on to her daughter;
