The John Brown Pair of Chippendale Carved Mahogany Side Chairs
Newport, Rhode Island, circa 1780.
Provenance: John Brown (1736-1803), Providence, Rhode Island;
To his daughter, Sarah Brown Herreshoff (1773-1846);
To her son Charles Frederick Herreshoff (1809-1888);
Thus by descent in the Herreshoff Family line.
Seat 18 1/2 in. (47 cm.), Crest 38 1/2 in. (97.8 cm.)Condition
The first: Cracks and repairs to splat. Corner braces replaced. Underside of rear rail with light mildewing. Typical bruising and wear consistent with age and use. Rails possible repinned with two pins per joint.
The second: Cracks and repairs to splat. Patch to small portion of splat. Slip seat and seat rail each marked “VI.” Rails possible repinned with two pins per joint. Cracks and repairs at top of front legs. Typical bruising and wear consistent with age and use. Otherwise, both in good sturdy condition and could each use benefit from new upholstery.
